Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs) are an important part of the Department of Transportation's (DOT) efforts to ensure that transportation employees are safe and fit for duty.
The role of SAPs in the DOT is to evaluate and make recommendations to employers regarding employees who have violated the DOT's drug and alcohol regulations. This includes employees who have failed a drug or alcohol test, as well as those who have refused to take a test. The SAP will conduct an evaluation to determine the employee's level of substance abuse and make recommendations for education, treatment, and follow-up testing.
The process of returning to work after a violation of the DOT's drug and alcohol regulations is a multi-step process. The employee must first complete the initial assessment, required education or treatment as recommended by the SAP, and the follow-up assessment. The employee must then pass a return-to-duty drug test and complete any follow-up random testing with their employer.
It's important to note that SAPs are independent and impartial evaluator, their role is to assess and make recommendations to the employer, not to determine if the employee will be return to work or not. This decision is made by the employer.
Overall, Substance Abuse Professionals play an important role in the DOT's efforts to ensure transportation safety by ensuring that employees who have violated the DOT's drug and alcohol regulations receive the appropriate education, treatment, and follow-up testing.
